Ode To The Wrestling Part 1
One day I espied - 2 men of great pride - whilst another said – “it was the Wrestling” -
Because - if no football - upon some Saturdays - this Wrestling - for me - was the best-thing.
They fought without gloves and they held, threw and slammed – in a squared-circle known as the Ring,
I was transfixed by this - a continuance of bliss - as I sat and I stared at the screen.

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

Then a whole new angle - in that roped off rectangle - as they tackled and grappled with glee -
Steve, Mick, Vic and Bert, giving all that they’d got - in a contest that they called tag-team.
Two of the top teams - in a rise to the top cream - only one that could claim victory -
It ended in a close draw - never a bore draw – they may fight again later it seems.

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

They also fought singles - with other Grapplers they’d mingle - and returning to fair haired young Vic -
With a cartwheel, a drop-kick, a conning the ref trick and a folding press he would make stick.

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

Now to Vic’s Brother Bertie - who never fought dirty - his flair was for all there to see -
He fought - Wrestling rodents - less talented opponents in halls and theatres and TV.
Part of Bert’s quest - showed skill at its best –
Bert would always be worthy -
But some could do both - had “Blue Eyes” on Toast
Step forward surly - Skull Murphy.

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

If mayhem was a game-plan - look no further than one man -
Flying moves with an edge and much “socko” -
For a quiet clean fight - will not be the sight -
From a tremendous combatant named Rocco.

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

Also top in spectacular - to use the vernacular - was a brilliant performer named Kidd.
Wee Georgie from Dundee – would show ’em how its done see? – to say nothing of Cyanide Sid.
Mick again versus Jackie - others who were wacky – and men who were as big as an Ash -
Do not go near ‘em – it’s time now to fear ‘em - or they’ll crush you with a move called the Splash !

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

With others it was forbidden - to see faces hidden - to some Wrestlers it fell to their task -
To try and remove it and never elude it – that mysterious menacing Mask.

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

So we all gathered, with sometimes blood spattered – to see grudges played short and long -
And there was Kent’s commentary “yi yi yi” was involuntary - as he spoke like a softly sung song.
And as we look back - at those men on the Mat - we remember them on WH Website.
For never again - will we see those brave men - their pride and their skill and their great-might.

Ode To The Wrestling Part 2
"Just what the doctor ordered".....

Among “Wrestling Promotions” there were Political Commotions
As they all vied to be on the small screen.
One man thought he’d better - turn to Cinema Theatres -
To get his OWN Wrestling seen.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

His name was Paul Lincoln
And he set to thinkin’
To reach his own wrestling dream -
A contract he’d fix it -
Work “The Odeon” circuit
And Wrestle there without silver screen

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

For “Lincoln Promotions” had talent in oceans
And Veidor and Cortez amazed.
They would fly through the air with the greatest of ease
With fans by now, Wrestling crazed.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

Lincoln’s Posters coast to coast
Red on Yellow looked the most -
Would invite you to Wrestling great days.
There was Hunter and Moser
L’Ange Blanc was no poser
Plus The “British” White Angel - Alfie Hayes.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

Paul Lincoln’s desire - was irons in the fire
And he owned the 2 i’s Coffee bar.
What’s more to the point
It was this rockin’ joint - that made Cliff and his Shadows into stars.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

Meanwhile at Dale Martin - a promoter that was startin’
To build a television show - that became something grand.
Also known as Joint Promotions - they were in black & white ghostin’ -
Into living rooms all over the land.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

As for Lincoln’s wrestle-army – it was driving ‘em barmy
It was time now to make a brave stand.
With pre-meditation - a squared circle invasion
At a future Joint Promotion was planned.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

A Wrestling stunt - with plenty of front
Was carried off for all there to see
With much flair and much zing
Came a challenge in Joint’s ring
A stroke of genius and pub-li-city.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

All’s well that ends well - at the sound of that wrestle bell
A buy-out that left nobody tainted.
For Joint and Dale Martin’s - there was no need for partin’
With Paul Lincoln they joined - amalgamated.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

Paul of course - could grapple - and in all black apparel
He’d don that initialled gown and dark hood.
For as “Doctor Death” - as the crowd held their breath
He’d smash opponent after opponent real good.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

But that was the sad thing - though his stars reached the TV ring
Those viewers never witnessed his paraphernalia.
At the height of his fame - D.D. was back where he came -
In that far distant land called Australia.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

He did though return - still more canvas to burn
But sadly by twenty eleven -
The Doctor himself - had now become ill
And passed into wrestling heaven.

♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠♠

After so much that was glory
A sad end to our story
And a journey from brilliance to stark.
But from Wrestling to Rock n’ Roll
Paul Lincoln had Soul
And on both genres - left an indelible mark.

THE END.

Ode To The Wrestling Part 3
Rivals
His real name was Gutteridge
But then it was Pallo
Boxing coach, then Wrestler
A talented fellow

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

A heel not a blue-eye - from his North London manor
He favoured the Pile-driver more than Back-hammer

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

With curled mane, a ribbon
And trunks striped like candy
In gold boots he strutted
Like a Beau Brummel dandy

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

But ah - he could wrestle
Our Cockney lad Jack’
Anyone who thought otherwise
Might go flat on their back

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

But Jackie “copped the needle”
And started to swelter
About an area-champion
In the weight-division Welter

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

McManus was his name
New Cross - London South
Wrestling ability
And plenty of mouth

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

One day as he Wrestled
Doing his thing
A man appeared yelling
On the Apron of Ring

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

Jackie screamed out
’neath long golden hair
“I challenge you McManus
fight me if you dare”.

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

1962 and a busy Wembley Way
For they met earlier than the Match
On Cup Final Day

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

Spurs versus Burnley
Well, they would meet later
First though ... McManus v Pallo
To see who was greater

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

Tickets were gold dust
Wrestling fever gripped the nation
TV cameras would be there
Incredible anticipation

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

Wembley was teaming
Excited foot-fall
And many a pair of ’em
On the way to Town Hall

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

The signs they were up ...
SOLD OUT ! to spectators
Those watching at home
Awaited the gladiators.

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

Mick took the lead using Jackie’s
Favourite move
And it took ’til round Five
To get Jack’ back in the groove

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

One each - with crowd
Thirsting for more
It ended in Six
An honourable draw.
♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

They fought many times
Over eleven great years
Some ended in victory
Some ended in tears.

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

Mick had the best of it
Retelling the fables
One famous occasion
Jackie turned the tables.

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

The most important thing
That the both of them gave
Was the history they created
For more than a decade.

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

The fans hated - then loved these two
But by two thousand and six
Sadly our Jackie was no longer in the mix

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

He left behind his beloved Trixie
And also his lad
Jackie Junior also wrestled -
So proud of his Dad.

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣
Mick followed seven years later
They’d had careers that went far
Now they’re both squabbling
In Wrestling Shangri-La.

♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣

They both gave it their all
The most special of times
From the opening bell - to the very last chimes
They wrestled the land from the top to the bottom
But be rest assured both
You’ll be never forgotten. (The End)
